Luke asked the question, as I am very sure he had done many times before, “How many cups of coffee have you had this morning?” Lorelai looked at him, clinging onto the empty cup and replied: “None.” The owner of Luke’s Diner just looked at her with disbelief. “Plus…” Caught! “Five, but yours is better!” She finally confessed. It was during the seven seasons that I discovered the true obsession people have when it comes to coffee. When Lorelai is asked in a later episode if she would likes coffee, she easily replies with a: “only with my oxygen!”

I’m not a coffee drinker. I grew up drinking Rooibos tea, I have since switched over to normal English Breakfast, but coffee…not so much. Now and again I enjoy sitting down to a cup of Cappuccino, but my system doesn’t always take too well to coffee — obviously because I don’t drink it regularly. If too strong, a cup of coffee can be to me what a heavy night out drinking could be to a sixteen year old. Tea however — I love! I met my match and tea drinking companion in Farah, a friend who shares my love for Coldplay, LOST and London. This was actually why we were meeting up today. She is leaving for London in about three weeks, but she’s leaving Cape Town in exactly a week from today — so naturally we have to work in loads of tea drinking sessions, starting today. Sundays, at least in Cape Town, was created to hang around in coffee shops, leisurely being lazy — looking goo doing so and flooding social media with check-in’s and photos to simply/basically show off.

Today was not so much about any of that is it was about catching up with friends after the holiday and actually go out and make the most of Sunday — where usually it is filled with laying around at home and not doing anything really, which I’m not saying is a problem though. Farah and I always joke, saying we live four houses from each other, or that I live in her backyard, because she genuinely lives right around the corner. I picked her up where she was waiting her famous pink handbag. I’m going to miss the girl so much — one of the very few people who actually understand me and my references. Our first stop was Truth Coffee. If you haven’t been here then this is definitely a must. A steampunk coffee shop that roasts some of the best coffee around. Even someone like me who is not a coffee expert is capable of saying that they really do serve an exceptional cup of coffee. I will however say that this is a spot that is also very much about the experience and the look and feel. I sat down to have a Cappuccino and rye bread with avo and rocket. I don’t recall having ever been at a restaurant where you can order toast with Marmite — three thumbs up! Farah had a pot of tea and a chocolate croissant, and so the conversation started — about moving to London, crashing with friends and obviously Taylor Swift, Chris Martin and Dave Grohl , also Dan from Bastille (also known as #SelfieDan to us). When we eventually paid the bill and left, driving away from where I parked on Coffee Lane (no jokes) we barely made it around the block when I saw Haas— another brilliant coffee/interior shop, a new one recently opened, the other one is based in Bo-Kaap. “Why not” we figured. We found a parking spot right at the front door and decided to go in fro tea — this time both of us had tea. What I found great here was the people watching. Like the three people sitting on the sofa — the beautiful middle aged woman, the well dressed guy with a beard and glasses, and the guy with the long brunette hair — laughing and chatting away on this lovely Sunday morning in the Mother City. Then there’s the three friends, all early twenties, sitting around a small round table, having breakfast. This is what I love about this city — these people, the characters that make up this stunning city I have the privilege to live in.

Our two-coffeeshop run had come to an end, time to head home. After three cups of tea and one Cappuccino, the tank was maxed out! I said goodbye to Farah, until tomorrow for lunch that is. I wasn’t yet planning for lunch today, but Bianca was coming to say hi. I also haven’t seen her in a while. She went to Jefferys Bay. The two of us settled in at the Red Sofa Cafe in Vredehoek. After starting out at a high table inside, we moved to round wooden table outside, only to get up and make our way to another around the corner — smoker’s friendly, Bianca was happy. Here, I will say, I actually checked-us in. I sided with the mushroom and caramelised onion wrap, while B went for the blueberry muffin. While staring up at Table Mountain, listening to stories of the Cape Town friends celebrating New Year’s on the East Coast, I got a warm fuzzy feeling inside — a happiness about the fact that I live here, this is my home — Table Mountain, Lions Head and the Atlantic Ocean washing up on the shores, even blending with the Indian Ocean as we stand famous for everything Two Oceans.

I want to explore the city so much more, now that I am not going anywhere without my Canon. For now though, I snapped just a few pictures today of what I consider a very successful and well spent Sunday in the beautiful Cape Town!
