“I would die without music in my life” Gus said, with confidence.
“Alright, so play me something worth dying over!” Fiona replied. This got me wondering. As me and my best friend sat on the blue coach, watching the latest episode of Shameless. I witness what is probably one of the best scenes on television I have seen in a very long time. It could have been a music video — I wanted it to never end. What song would I play, a song that is worth dying over? I instantly new. It isn’t my favourite song of all time — that is Fast Car, by the genius Tracy Chapman, which isn’t to say it that it’s not a brilliant song. Then I started writing this blog, and I changed my mind. So, was I then in-fact sure of which song I would pick? If I could play one song, just one single song, which one would it be? The song worth dying over?
At first, I thought — easy, Iron Sky, by Paulo Nutini, and to be more specific, the Abby Road Session version, but no, that wasn’t it. Again, it is one of the most powerful songs I know. This sound would have to mean so much more than just any song you would listen to during your every day life. When Gus started playing on his guitar, singing that Damien Jurado song, Fiona froze, got up while he was still busy singing, went and sat on his lap, then she kissed him. “Holy shit.” She whispered. What is that song, that song that you play and that by the end of it you will go, holy shit, that was fucking amazing? I changed my mind, no, it wasn’t meant to be that Nutini song.
I remember playing the song I chose to my friend, Marli, once. It was the first time she had ever heard it. We were driving and I played her songs of a new album, this being the last track on the record. The volume was turned up and you could literally feel the emotions in the song. She nearly started crying. Music has that power, that ability. Music is life, and life is music — twenty-four-seven! How is it even possible to imagine a life without it? I’ll tell you: it’s not.
I’m not going to stretch this out any longer, and I am also not going to talk about the song, explain my choice or elaborate for several paragraphs. Just go listen to the songs. Put the volume real loud, and just listen, take it all in. The song that I think is worth dying over is, without a doubt in my mind, ‘O’ by Coldplay.
